The history of jazz and an academic career

This semester I took a class on jazz improvisation at MIT and learned about the history of jazz: from its early forms in New Orleans, to the Big Band Era of swing, to bebop, to modal jazz, to the avant-garde, and now contemporary jazz improvisers.

In my mind, these eras map onto an individual’s academic career. (More to say about this, but later…)
